Maynard Dixon was an important 20th-century American painter who is best known for his iconic depictions of the American West. Originally from California, Dixon painted subjects in Arizona, New Mexico and eventually settled in Southern Utah.
Born in Fresno, California, Maynard Dixon was largely self-taught as an artist. His first sketches were of the Western landscape. In 1893 he attended the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art in San Francisco, but withdrew after only three months.
Maynard Dixon suffered from asthma as a child and learned to draw as a form of entertainment that did not require much exertion. By the age of sixteen, Maynard Dixon was determined to make a career of illustrating the Old West. He sent two sketchbooks to his favorite artist, Frederic Remington.
