Calvin Ellis Stowe (April 6, 1802 – August 22, 1886) was an American Biblical scholar who helped spread public education in the United States. Over his career, he was a professor of languages and Biblical and sacred literature at Andover Theological Seminary, Dartmouth College, Lane Theological Seminary, and Bowdoin College.

Calvin E. Stowe, professor and librarian at Lane Seminary in Cincinnati from 1833 to 1850, was chiefly responsible for the development there of what appar- ently was the largest academic library in the West.
Calvin Ellis Stowe was born in 1802 in New England. His father died when Stowe was just 6 years old. His mother was too poor to take care of him so he was sent to the home of his grandparents for room and board. At age 12, he was apprenticed to a paper maker.
