The Jaguar Hunter is a collection of science fiction, fantasy and horror stories by American author Lucius Shepard. Illustrated by J. K. Potter, it was released in May, 1987 and was the author's first book published by Arkham House.

Once he had been proclaimed the greatest hunter in the province of Nueva Esperanza, as had his father before him, and he had not retired from hunting because of age or infirmity, but because the jaguars were beautiful, and their beauty had begun to outweigh the reasons he had for killing them.
13 mag 2024 · “The Jaguar Hunter” is the prototypical Shepard story, in that it tackles his pet ideas, plus a grizzled protagonist, plus an exotic locale, all in a neat package. It hasn’t aged so much as its problematic elements were so from day one, but as a result it’s also tempting to call it timeless.
1 gen 1987 · The Jaguar Hunter is a nice story about materialism and greed overtaking the spiritual and natural world. It blends modernity with mythology, sort of like the many Celtic run-ins you see so often of nymphs and faeries, but based—probably, and refreshingly—on the Tsunki of Central America.
