McCain's father, the elder John Sidney McCain, known as J. S. McCain, served as sheriff and, later, President of the Board of Supervisors of Carroll County. McCain's older brother, another William Alexander McCain, also attended the University of Mississippi before transferring to the United States Military Academy.
