The major work present here is the 1909 song cycle On Wenlock Edge, for tenor, piano and string quartet, a setting of poms by A.E.Houseman, and often recorded. It contains what, for me, is the most beautiful and memorable of RVW’s songs, From Far, from Eve and Morning.

9 feb 2024 · This appealing song cycle is performed with warmth. Throughout, all the musicians pleasantly capture the minutiae of RVW’s score bringing his chosen texts to life. The saucy bold robber is characteristically a RVW folksong exhibiting, according to Potts, a new confidence in textural economy varying the pianistic textures for the paired verses.
Composition. Following the composition of Five Mystical Songs in 1911, Vaughan Williams began to compose a smaller scale piece, which was completed in 1914. However, World War I delayed the presentation of the song cycle until 1920.
