His father was a tailor, whose only artistic trait is the love of playing the guitar. Guillermo or Memong, as his family called him, inherited this artistic skill.

Guillermo Estrella Tolentino (July 24, 1890 – July 12, 1976) was a Filipino sculptor and professor of the University of the Philippines. He was designated as a National Artist of the Philippines for Sculpture in 1973, three years before his death.

Returning from Europe (where he was enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Rome) in 1925, he was appointed as a professor at the UP School of Fine Arts where the idea also of executing a monument for national heroes struck him.
