Meera Syal CBE FRSL (born Feroza Syal; 27 June 1961) is an English comedian, writer, playwright, singer, journalist and actress. She rose to prominence as one of the team that created Goodness Gracious Me and by portraying Sanjeev's grandmother, Ummi, in The Kumars at No. 42 .

The career of Manchester alumna Meera Syal was recognised by BAFTA on Sunday night, as she was given their highest Fellowship award at their glittering ceremony in London.
Now she boasts both an MBE and CBE for her services to drama and literature, and is all set to receive BAFTA’s highest honour, the Fellowship, at this year’s BAFTA Television Awards with P&O Cruises.
