William George Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong, CB FRS (26 November 1810 – 27 December 1900) was an English engineer and industrialist who founded the Armstrong Whitworth manufacturing concern on Tyneside. He was also an eminent scientist, inventor and philanthropist.
William George Armstrong, Baron Armstrong was a British industrialist and engineer who invented high-pressure hydraulic machinery and revolutionized the design and manufacture of guns. Armstrong abandoned his Newcastle law practice in 1847 to devote full time to scientific experimentation.

Ingegnere (Newcastle-on-Tyne 1810 - Cragside, Northumberland, 1900); creò (1846) l'azienda metallurgica e meccanica che prese il suo nome. Progettò varî tipi di arma. Nel 1882 impiantò i cantieri navali di Elswick e nel 1897 fuse la sua industria con quella di J. Withworth.

27 mar 2018 · As an inventor, Armstrong is perhaps most famous for his development of a hydraulic system enabling the famous Swing Bridge on Newcastle’s Quayside to open – and the Tower Bridge in London too. Armstrong’s hydraulic machinery was dependent upon water mains or reservoirs for power and so in 1850 he invented a hydraulic accumulator.
