Zemlinsky’s grandfather, Anton Semlinski, emigrated from Žilina, Hungary (now in Slovakia) to Austria and married an Austrian woman.
Alexander (von) Zemlinsky, Pseudonym Al Roberts, (* 14. Oktober 1871 in Wien; † 15. März 1942 in Larchmont, New York) war ein österreichischer Komponist und Dirigent. Sein Vater war der Schriftsteller und Journalist Adolf von Zemlinszky .
Studiò al conservatorio di Vienna. Fu attivo come direttore d'orchestra nei teatri dell'opera di Vienna, di Praga e di Berlino ed ebbe come allievi di composizione A. Schönberg e molti altri musicisti d'avanguardia.

Alexander Zemlinsky is one of those composers who do not enjoy great renown and yet were very highly regarded in their time. His works did not change the history of music but are an authentic testimony of the turbulent developments in music between 1890 and 1940.
