20 lug 1998 · Witold Lutosławski was an outstanding Polish composer of the 20th century who attempted to create a new musical language by incorporating elements of folk songs, 12-tone serialism, atonal counterpoint, and controlled improvisations reminiscent of aleatory (chance, see aleatory music) compositions.
‘The element in which I feel most at home is the symphony orchestra’, declared Witold Lutosławski. In his four symphonies and his instrumental concertos, his dozen or so orchestral works and his songs with orchestra, he forged a soundworld that captivates one with its wealth of timbres and its irresistible force of expression.
