Gerald Arpino (January 14, 1923 – October 29, 2008) was an American dancer and choreographer. He was the co-founder of the Joffrey Ballet and succeeded Robert Joffrey as its artistic director in 1988.

Gerald Arpino was an American ballet choreographer, a leader of the Joffrey Ballet from its founding in 1956 until 2007. While serving in the U.S. Coast Guard (1945–48), Arpino met dancer Robert Joffrey in Seattle, Washington, and learned dancing in his spare time.

Gerald Arpino was born in Staten Island, New York in 1923 and died in Chicago in 2008. He co-founded The Joffrey Ballet with Robert Joffrey in 1956 and served as Associate Director. Upon Joffrey’s death in 1988, Mr. Arpino succeeded him as Artistic Director.
Created for the Joffrey Ballet’s Silver Anniversary, it represents the youth and energy of the dancers it was created on. Light Rain remains the foundation’s most requested work. Gerald Arpino created this ballet to showcase the new young dancers of the company.
As co-founder of the Joffrey Ballet in New York with Robert Joffrey in 1956, Gerald Arpino was the nationally known company’s associate director for many years and, upon Joffrey’s 1988 death, succeeded him as artistic director.
