The French “ensemble drama” is genre unto itself, and Téchiné knows what he’s doing. Here, it’s a restrained period piece set in the early 80s about a young gay man newly arrived in Paris and his social circle. The film takes on the nascent AIDS crisis without resorting to histrionics or sensationalism.
