Trama. Uscito da un ospedale giusto in tempo per ricevere lo sfratto, il diciannovenne Jean Michel Basquiat vaga per Downtown New York cercando qualcuno interessato ai suoi quadri, scrivendo dei messaggi ironici e di denuncia sociale sui muri della città.

New York Beat was shot over December 1980 and January 1981. The film was funded by Rizzoli, but the movie was abandoned in the mid-'80s due to financial problems. Producer O'Brien resurrected the film after acquiring the rights in 1999 (over a decade after Basquiat's death).
Questa è la New York raccontata da Tama Janowitz e Jay MacInereney, e a ricostruirla in tempo reale è Glenn O'Brien, autore e produttore di Downtown '81 (originariamente intitolato New York Beat Movie), già noto come membro della Factory di Andy Warhol e editor di "Interview", poi affermato scrittore nonché columnist del "Vanity Fair" italiano.
