With the assistance of Audrey (Susan Oliver), his determined wife, Shorty Younger (Red Buttons), his boss, and Fred Rose (Arthur O’Connell), a music publisher, Hank gains a passionate fan base and becomes a country music star. However, it isn’t long before the difficulties of success become too much for Hank to bear.
After Teetot's untimely death, young Hank sets his sights on a career in music; years later, Williams (played as an adult by George Hamilton) is performing as part of a traveling medicine show when he meets Audrey (Susan Oliver), who recognizes the full extent of Hank's talent.
