The film follows Dr. Hess Green ( Duane Jones ), a wealthy black anthropologist who is doing research on the Myrthians, an ancient African nation of blood drinkers. One night, while staying in Green's lavish mansion, richly decorated with African art, his unstable assistant George Meda ( Bill Gunn) threatens suicide.

Lucas and Walker argue that Blood Couple should be considered as its own film, an alternate version with its own particular qualities. In some cases it includes shots and scenes not present in the Ganja & Hess version.

Gunn plays a very eccentric character who is obsessed with suicide and after stabbing Hess with an ancient knife, he finally kills himself in turn is when Hess comes too and drinks his blood.
