Max von Sydow stars here as Kvist, a brake-controller on an iron ore train making its way across rural, marshy Lapland in the 1930s. When the steam train stops for lubrication at a small isolated station, Kvist makes the seemingly impulsive decision to step off the train and let it continue on its journey without him.
