Hazel Jane Dickens (June 1, 1925 – April 22, 2011) was an American bluegrass singer, songwriter, double bassist and guitarist. Her music was characterized not only by her high, lonesome singing style, but also by her provocative pro-union, feminist songs.
1 mar 2021 · Though Hazel Dickens is best known as a pioneering woman of bluegrass and for her powerful labor songs advocating for working people, she was one of those working people she sang about, juggling her music with full-time jobs until late in her career.
Born in West Virginia, Hazel Dickens recorded twice for Folkways Records and was a frequent participant of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, appearing some fifteen times. In this rare video from 1978, she sings one of her most treasured songs.

Singer, songwriter, and social activist Hazel Dickens excelled in a bluegrass music career that spanned more than fifty years. She served as a role model for women performers in bluegrass, old-time, and country music.
Folk, country and bluegrass guitarist, singer and songwriter. Dickens, of Appalachian origin and born in Mercer County, West Virginia, wrote movingly of life in the coal fields and the downtrodden. She moved to the Baltimore/D.C. area in her late teens to join the burgeoning Bluegrass/Folk scene and met Mike Seeger and Alice Dickens.
