  7. Arthur Nikisch (born Oct. 12, 1855, Lébényi Szentmiklós, Hung.—died Jan. 23, 1922, Leipzig, Ger.) was one of the finest conductors of the late 19th century. After study in Vienna, in 1878 Nikisch was appointed choral coach at the Leipzig Opera, becoming principal conductor in 1879.
