Beaufort fu cavaliere dell'Ordine della Giarrettiera e dal 22 aprile 1679 Privy Councillor e Lord Presidente del Galles, succedendo a Richard Vaughan, II conte di Carbery; il titolo di Duca di Beaufort fu riconfermato da Guglielmo III d'Inghilterra, benché non fosse suo sostenitore.
Il titolo di Duca di Beaufort nella Parìa inglese venne creato da Carlo II d'Inghilterra nel 1682 per Henry Somerset, III marchese di Worcester, discendente di Charles Somerset, I conte di Worcester, figlio illegittimo di Henry Beaufort, III Duca di Somerset, leader del partito dei Lancaster nella Guerra delle Due Rose.
Origins. Edmund Beaufort was the fourth surviving son of John Beaufort, 1st Earl of Somerset, the eldest of the four legitimised children of John of Gaunt (1340–1399) (third surviving son of King Edward III) by his mistress, later wife, Katherine Swynford.
