James Madison Wells (January 7, 1808 – February 28, 1899) was elected Lieutenant Governor and became the 20th Governor of Louisiana during Reconstruction.
7 dic 2016 · A lexandria native James Wells served as governor of Louisiana from 1865 until 1867, leading the state’s initial efforts at Reconstruction. After serving as lieutenant governor under Michael Hahn , Wells assumed the office when Hahn was named to the U.S. Senate.
In Louisiana, James Madison Wells, though a man of means himself, denounced the Confederacy as a rich man’s government and organized a guerrilla campaign against it. From his Bear Wallow stronghold in Rapides Parish, Wells led deserters and other resisters in raids against Confederate supply lines and depots.

Career after Term: Chairman of the State Returning Board which reviewed election results. Died: February 18, 1899 in Lecompte, Louisiana and is interred in Rapides Parish. James Madison Wells became Governor upon the resignation of Governor Hahn who left office to serve in the U. S. Senate.
