Vita e attività. Figlio di un avvocato ghigliottinato durante il Terrore, fu educato a Ginevra, nello spirito della ortodossia calvinista. Laureato in legge a Parigi, dopo essere stato prof. di storia alla Sorbona (1812), con la Restaurazione divenne segretario generale del ministero della Giustizia (fino al 1816), poi consigliere di Stato.
