The son of a silk manufacturer, Louis Gabriel Suchet is considered to be one of Napoleon's best marshals and he holds the distinction of being the only marshal who improved his reputation during the campaigns of the Peninsular War in Spain.
Maresciallo di Francia, nato a Lione il 2 marzo 1772, morto presso Marsiglia il 3 gennaio 1826. Arruolatosi fra i volontarî del Rodano nel 1791, dopo due anni venne eletto capo di battaglione e con questo grado prese parte al celebre assedio di Tolone (1793).
Fu poi (1808-14) comandante militare nelle province d'Aragona, di Catalogna e di Valenza: prese Lérida e riportò presso Sagunto una vittoria (1811) che gli valse il bastone di maresciallo e il titolo di duca d'Albufera. Schieratosi con Napoleone durante i Cento giorni, cadde in disgrazia con la seconda Restaurazione.
