Michel Micombero (26 August 1940 – 16 July 1983) was a Burundian politician and army officer who ruled the country as de facto military dictator for the decade between 1966 and 1976.
Michel Micombero, né le 26 août 1940 à Rutovu et mort le 16 juillet 1983 à Mogadiscio, est un officier et homme d'État burundais. Il est premier ministre du 11 juillet au 28 novembre 1966 puis premier président de la république du Burundi du 28 novembre 1966 au 1 er novembre 1976 .
Micombero overthrew Ntare V and declared Burundi a republic and himself its president. Micombero formalized his role as president in his 1974 constitution formally adopted in 1976. The constitution guaranteed Micombero's presidency and established a one-party state led by the Union for National Progress (UPRONA).
