Biografia. Era il figlio di John Leveson-Gower, I Barone di Gower (7 gennaio 1674 - 31 agosto 1709) e di sua moglie Lady Catherine Manners (19 maggio 1675 - 7 marzo 1722). I suoi nonni materni erano John Manners, I duca di Rutland e Catherine Wriothesley Noel, figlia di Baptist Noel, III visconte di Campden.
John Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Gower, PC (10 August 1694 – 25 December 1754) was an English Tory politician and peer who twice served as Lord Privy Seal from 1742 to 1743 and 1744 to 1754.
Leveson Gower entered the House with considerable contacts among the Tories, particularly the Granvilles and the Hydes: his grandfather was the 1st Earl of Bath and his uncle was Hon. John Granville*; his sister married Lord Hyde (Henry*), the heir of the Earl of Rochester (Laurence Hyde†), in 1692.
Career. John Leveson-Gower was Tory MP for Newcastle-under-Lyme, 1692–1703. [2] . He was created Baron Gower of Sittenham in the County of York on 16 March 1703. [2] . He was made member of the Privy Council from 1702 to 1707, and he was appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 1702 to 1706. [2] .

Leveson-Gower entered the Royal Navy and was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1758, during the Seven Years' War. He commanded the fireship Salamander at the Battle of Lagos and, from the early months of 1760, he was commander of the Kingfisher sloop. On 30th June, he was promoted to be captain of the Flamborough frigate.
