Cainan (in ebraico קֵינָן Kênān) o Cainam è un patriarca post-diluviano citato nella Septuaginta, la traduzione greca del Libro della Genesi, nel Libro dei Giubilei e nella genealogia di Gesù del Vangelo di Luca (Lc 3:36 [1] ), dove appunto è utilizzato il nome Cainam per Cainan o per Chenan.

Il nome Cainan manca anche in Luca 3:36 in alcuni manoscritti biblici (papiro Bodmer XIV-XV, del 200 E.V. ca.; codice di Beza, del V secolo E.V.). Questa omissione concorda col testo masoretico in Genesi 10:24; 11:12, 15 e 1 Cronache 1:18 , secondo cui il figlio di Arpacsad fu Sela, non Cainan.

According to the text, Arpachshad's brothers were Elam, Asshur, Lud and Aram. Arpachshad's son is called Selah, except in the Septuagint, where his son is Cainan, Shelah being Arpachshad's grandson. Cainan is also identified as Arpachshad's son in Luke 3:36 and in the non-canonical book of Jubilees 8:1.
