Politically ambitious, and a committed general, he was placed under house arrest following a poor campaign in Ireland during the Nine Years' War in 1599.

9 dic 2003 · Roberto Devereux opera seria in tre atti Libretto di Salvatore Cammarano The story of the count of Essex, who was decapitated by Elisabeth I in 1601 wasn't new by the time Donizetti composed his opera. The theater used the plot already in 1637 and 1678 in plays by Gauthier de Costes de la Calprenede and Thomas Corneille respectively.
