José Rafael Carrera y Turcios (24 October 1814 – 14 April 1865) was the president of Guatemala from 1844 to 1848 and from 1851 until his death in 1865, after being appointed President for life in 1854.

Rafael Carrera (born Oct. 24, 1814, Guatemala City—died April 4, 1865, Guatemala City) was the dictator of Guatemala (1844–48 and 1851–65) and one of the most powerful figures of 19th-century Central America. Carrera, a mestizo (of mixed European and Indian ancestry), had no formal education.

17 mar 2017 · José Rafael Carrera y Turcios (1815-1865) was the first President of Guatemala, serving during the turbulent years of 1838 to 1865. Carrera was an illiterate pig farmer and bandit who rose to the presidency, where he proved himself a Catholic zealot and iron-fisted tyrant.
Rafael Carrera followed a different route to the top from that of most national caudillos and learnt the art of leadership in more primitive conditions. Carrera played a major role in the Mita rebellion of 1837, when 2,000 peasants rioted against the district governor of Mita.
