Nel 1948 a Losanna, Vladimir sposò la principessa georgiana Leonida Georgievna Bagration di Mukhrani. Nel 1969, Vladimir dichiarò la loro unica figlia, 16 anni, Maria, erede al trono.
La linea dinastica primogenita dei Mukhrani, oggi estinta, diede svariati re alla Georgia fra il 1659 ed 1724, mentre quella collaterale, cui Leonida apparteneva, non salì mai al trono. The Bagration of Mukhrani line is therefore the senior succession to the 15th century kingdom of Georgia.
