Harry Govier Seeley (1839-1909) was a talented, combative and somewhat idiosyncratic palaeontologist who opposed Darwinian evolution.
Top flautists ordered new flutes from him, students sought him out for repairs, and younger makers learnt their trade at his side. Harry Seeley traces his flutemaking back to a Scottish scoutmaster who organised a pipe band near his home in Tottenham, North London.
In the latter half of the 19th century Harry Seeley, who had been trained in Cambridge by Adam Sedgwick, established a fundamental classification of dinosaurs based primarily upon the shape of their hip bones: they were either saurischians (‘lizard-hipped’) or ornithischians (‘bird-hipped’).
