Edmund Beecher Wilson (October 19, 1856 – March 3, 1939) was a pioneering American zoologist and geneticist. He wrote one of the most influential textbooks in modern biology, The Cell. He discovered the chromosomal XY sex-determination system in 1905—that human males have XY and females XX sex chromosomes.

5 ago 2013 · His three editions of The Cell in Development and Inheritance (or Heredity) in 1896, 1900, and 1925 introduced generations of students to cell biology. In The Cell, Wilson described the evidence and theories of his time about cells and identified topics for future study.
A long-time Trustee who returned to the MBL most summers for the rest of his life, Wilson was a great supporter of the MBL. He encouraged study of marine invertebrates in order to understand fundamental biological processes.
