Opened in 1981, it was home to the New Jersey Nets NBA team until 2010, the Seton Hall University men's basketball team until 2007 and to the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League until 2007.

The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA) holds the land lease for and provides for the ongoing operation of the MetLife Sports Complex, which includes the Meadowlands Arena, MetLife Stadium, the Meadowlands Racetrack and American Dream.
