Nell'antica mitologia greca, le Sirene (Σειρῆνες Seirénes) erano creature dal volto di donna e il corpo di uccello, ma dotate di una voce dolcissima e ammaliante. A partire dal Medioevo, la tradizione cominciò a immaginarle e raffigurarle con l'aspetto di belle fanciulle con la coda di pesce al posto delle gambe.
