Johnny Ringo, a notorious gunslinger, is hired as the sheriff of Velardi, Arizona, a wide-open frontier town. His first act as the Velardi's lawman is to hire the town drunk, Case Thomas, as his deputy.
Ringo investigates a brutal stagecoach robbery where the driver and one of the passengers were killed. The only survivor is Agnes St. John, an author writing a book about the brutal violence of the West.
