In 2015, the Council of Megatrend University changed the name of the institution to University John Naisbitt. The name was changed back to Megatrend University in 2017. As of 2022–23 school year, Megatrend has a total of 396 enrolled students.

John Naisbitt is a renowned futurologist, author and professor who founded the Naisbitt China Institute and received 15 honorary doctorates. He is also the founder of Megatrend University, a Serbian institution that awards him the title of Doctor Honoris Causa for his scientific and intellectual contributions.
