Robert Motherwell nasce ad Aberdeen, Washington (USA), il 4 gennaio 1915. A undici anni vince una borsa di studio dell'Otis Art Institute di Los Angeles, e nel 1932 studia pittura per un breve periodo alla California School of Fine Arts di San Francisco.
