Biografia. Figlio dell'incisore Søren Abildgaard, che ne fu il primo maestro [1], dal 1764 studiò all' Accademia Reale Danese d'Arte di Copenaghen, distinguendosi per le sue doti che lo portarono a vincere diversi premi. Nel 1769 divenne assistente all'Accademia.

Pittore (n. Copenaghen 1743 - m. presso Frederiksdal 1809). In Italia, tra il 1772 e il 1777, studiò le opere d'arte dell'antichità e i maestri del Cinquecento. Famosa era la sua decorazione del castello di Christiansborg, poi distrutta.
