In occasione di un viaggio a Napoli (1760), visitò gli scavi di Ercolano e Pompei. Tornato in patria, fu ammesso all'Accademia con il Capriccio architettonico con il Pantheon e il Porto di Ripetta (1766, Parigi, École supérieure des beaux-arts).
