William Rothenstein was the father of art historian Sir John Rothenstein, who was the director of the Tate Gallery from 1938 to 1964, and the highly respected British printmaker Michael Rothenstein, whose divorce from Duffy Ayers caused a major controversy in British society.
Pittore e scrittore, nato a Bradford il 29 gennaio 1872. Studiò sotto A. Legros alla Slade School di Londra e più tardi sotto Julien a Parigi; si fece conoscere da prima come disegnatore ritrattista con le sue serie d'illustri contemporanei (litografie pubblicate nel 1897 e nel 1898).

In 1919 he was appointed Visitor to the Royal College of Art, becoming Principal (1920-35). William Rothenstein was knighted in 1931 and also served as a war artist in the Second World War, dying at his home at Far Oakridge, Gloucestershire, England on 14 February 1945.
