Nicolaes Maes (January 1634 – December 1693 (buried 24 December 1693)) was a Dutch painter known for his genre scenes, portraits, religious compositions and the occasional still life. A pupil of Rembrandt in Amsterdam, he returned to work in his native city of Dordrecht for 20 years.
Nicolaes Maes, also known as Nicolaes Maas (January 1634 – November 24, 1693 (buried)) was a Dutch Golden Age painter of genre and portraits. Maes was born in Dordrecht, the son of Gerrit Maes, a prosperous merchant, and Ida Herman Claesdr.

Maes produced almost all of his small-scale paintings of domestic interiors during the mid-1650s, one of the two types of picture for which he is best known. By 1656 Maes began painting portraits, and he eventually worked exclusively as a fashionable portrait painter.

29 gen 2024 · Nicolaes Maes (1634-1693) was one of Rembrandt's most gifted pupils. He was about fifteen when he moved from Dordrecht to Amsterdam to take up his apprenticeship with the great master. Until around 1660, Maes tended to paint genre scenes in the same style as Rembrandt, with plenty of chiaroscuro and warm colours.
