Ernst Barlach is born on 2 January in Wedel, Holstein, as the first of four sons to the doctor Georg Barlach and his wife Louise, née Vollert. In 1872 the family moves to Schönberg in Mecklenburg, in 1877 to Ratzeburg. After the unexpected death of Georg Barlach in 1884, Louise moves back to Schönberg with her sons.
