Roland Penrose nasce a St. Johns Wood, Londra, il 14 ottobre 1900. Considerato uno dei maggiori artisti surrealisti, è pittore, scrittore, gallerista, curatore e collezionista. Dopo gli studi in architettura al Queens' College di Cambridge, decide di dedicarsi alla pittura e nel 1922 si trasferisce a Parigi per studiare con André Lhote.
