Autore di canzonette leggere, di carattere borghese e popolare, che seppero interpretare lo spirito del popolo francese, il senso della libertà e dell'indipendenza nazionali. La sua satira fu efficace specialmente durante la Restaurazione e gli attirò condanne dalla monarchia.
