Nel 1592 era maestro e nel 1609-10 decano della gilda dei pittori. Andò a Roma, e al ritorno ad Anversa fece parte della Confrérie des Romanistes, di cui fu anche decano nel 1613.

  5. Hendrick van Balen or Hendrick van Balen I was a Flemish Baroque painter and stained glass designer. Hendrick van Balen specialised in small cabinet pictures often painted on a copper support. His favourite themes were mythological and allegorical scenes and, to a lesser extent, religious subjects.

A resident of Antwerp for most of his life, he became a master (Freimeister) in the city’s Guild of St. Luke (1592/3) before embarking on a trip to Italy.
