Elaine de Kooning (born March 12, 1920, New York, N.Y., U.S.—died February 1, 1989, Southampton, Long Island, N.Y.) was an American painter, teacher, and art critic who is perhaps best known for her portraits.
In numerous series—“bullfights,” “basketball players,” and “Bacchus”—de Kooning brought the expressive gesture of Abstract Expressionism to bear on figurative subjects. She is perhaps best known for her portrait of John F. Kennedy, commissioned by the Truman Library.
