Franz Kline is most famous for his black and white abstractions, which have been likened variously to New York's cityscape, the landscape of his childhood home in rural Pennsylvania, and Japanese calligraphy.

Painter, Abstract Expressionist. Early in his career, Kline painted landscapes, street scenes and portraits. His mature style was abstract, distinctive for its broad, highly charged black strokes on a white ground.
Alla fine degli anni quaranta Kline ha ormai sviluppato un propria maturità stilistica astratta, caratterizzata da segni decisi in bianco o in nero. La sua prima personale è organizzata alla Egan Gallery di New York nel 1950 e lo impone come uno dei maggiori esponenti dell'Espressionismo astratto.
