Date of birth. 1866. Date of death. 1944. The grandson of a sculptor, Heinrich Kühn initially used photography to aid his medical studies. He gave up medicine for art around 1890, but spent much of his life pursuing technical research into new photographic lenses and printing processes.

From this training he turned to microscopic photography, but around 1890, after continued experiments with this procedure, he gave up medicine entirely and devoted himself solely to photography.
