Autore drammatico e poeta inglese, nato nel 1606 a Oxford nella locanda del padre, dove Shakespeare era solito fermarsi quando viaggiava tra Stratford e Londra. Di qui la voce che fosse figlio di Shakespeare. Studiò ad Oxford e fu a servizio dapprima nella famiglia della Duchessa di Richmond e quindi in quella di Fulke Greville.
Fu creato poeta laureato nel 1638. Attivo sostenitore di Carlo I, ebbe il titolo di baronetto all'assedio di Gloucester (1643). Scrisse un lungo poema epico, Gondibert (1651), ma è più importante come uomo di teatro.
