Olaudah Equiano, noto anche come Gustavus Vassa (Essaka, 1745 circa – Londra, 31 marzo 1797), è stato uno scrittore e attivista nigeriano del XVIII secolo. Olaudah Equiano (/ ə ˈ l aʊ d ə /; c. 1745 – 31 March 1797), known for most of his life as Gustavus Vassa (/ ˈ v æ s ə /), was a writer and abolitionist. According to his memoir, he was from the village of Essaka in modern southern Nigeria .

Olaudah Equiano, whose father was an Ibo chief, was born in 1745 in what is now Southern Nigeria. At the age of 11 years, Olaudah was captured by African slave traders and sold into bondage in the New World.
In this autobiography, the author, Olaudah Equiano, detailed his life journey from African captivity to Atlantic slavery to British freedom. In twelve chapters, Equiano presented a body of evidence that helped to support the cause of abolition and the end of transatlantic slaving by Britain and others.
