Richard Dedekind was a German mathematician who developed a major redefinition of irrational numbers in terms of arithmetic concepts. Although not fully recognized in his lifetime, his treatment of the ideas of the infinite and of what constitutes a real number continues to influence modern.
DEDEKIND, Julius Wilhelm Richard. Alberto Mario Bedarida. Matematico, nato il 6 ottobre 1831 a Brunswick, ivi morto il 12 febbraio 1916. Si laureò in matematica a Gottinga nel 1854, e nel 1858 fu nominato professore nel politecnico di Zurigo, che lasciò nel 1862 per trasferirsi a quello della sua città natale.
