Christoph Martin Wieland (German:; 5 September 1733 – 20 January 1813) was a German poet and writer. He is best-remembered for having written the first Bildungsroman ( Geschichte des Agathon ), [1] as well as the epic Oberon , which formed the basis for Carl Maria von Weber 's opera of the same name .

His works include prose translations of 22 of Shakespeare 's plays – the first to be made in German – and the novels Agathon (1766–67); Peregrinus Proteus (1791) and Aristipp (1800–01). He also wrote the verse epic Oberon (1780).
